Hillary For President?

A recent story in the Christian Science Monitor caught my eye. It begins as follows:

If Hillary Rodham Clinton decides to run for president in 2016, would she be unbeatable? That’s the pronouncement of former GOP Speaker and onetime presidential candidate Newt Gingrich.

On NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, Mr. Gingrich flatly proclaimed his party “incapable” of beating Mrs. Clinton in a potential 2016 matchup.

“[I]f their competitor in ‘16 is going to be Hillary Clinton – supported by Bill Clinton and presumably a still-relatively-popular President Barack Obama – trying to win that will be truly the Superbowl,” Gingrich said. “And the Republican Party today is incapable of competing at that level.”

There are so many aspects of this report one hardly knows where to start. For one thing, it’s Newt: the new Guru of the Republican Party, waxing wise. For another it’s four years away…

The Agreements of the People, 1647-1649

The History of Parliament

The History’s Philip Baker tells us about his new book, out this week, on the Levellers’ Agreements of the People..

Many people might be surprised to learn that we need not have waited until the present day for fixed-term parliaments, or even until the 1832 Reform Act for a significant expansion of the franchise and redistribution of parliamentary seats, if proposals discussed at the height of the English civil war had been realised. Between 1647 and 1649, these and many other modern-sounding ideas – including the complete separation of the legislative and executive arms of government and the stripping away of the political powers of the monarchy and the House of Lords – were put forward in a series of draft written constitutions called the Agreements of the People. Written, variously, by the London-based petitioner movement known as the Levellers, officers and common soldiers of the parliamentarian New Model…

DeMint: Obama ‘Going To Get His Wish’ To Raise Taxes

WASHINGTON (AP) — A leading conservative who’s resigning from the Senate is predicting that President Barack Obama will win the battle over raising taxes.

South Carolina Republican Jim DeMint calls it “a political trophy” within Obama’s grasp. Appearing Thursday on “CBS This Morning,” DeMint says, quote, “The president’s proposal is not a plan, it’s not a solution.”

Asked why Obama and congressional Republicans can’t agree on a plan to avert a fiscal cliff in less than three weeks, DeMint says both political parties have “failed” the country.

On Obama, the senator says, “He’s going to get his wish. I believe we’re going to be raising taxes and not just on the top earners.”

DeMint is stepping down from the Senate to become president of the Heritage Institution, a conservative think tank.

The Last Of The Millenniums

Sarah Palin speaking about President Obama :

“He believes in socialism, in redistributing, in confiscating hard-earned dollars of our small businessmen and women so that they cannot re-invest their dollars and hire more people and grow and expand’:

And what you taught your daughter………

‘The California company that made Bristol Palin’s TV show about raising her child has collected a $354,348 subsidy from the state’.

‘Unlike nearly all of the other shows and films subsidized so far under the movie incentive program, the salaries paid to Alaska residents on the Palin show account for a majority of the total “Alaska expenses” for the TV show’.

‘Palin and the five other Alaska residents who participated as “talent” on the show collected close to a half-million in wages’.

“Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp” ran for 14 episodes last summer on the Lifetime Channel and did not gather big ratings…
